About us
Hi, my name is Doug Clarke, and I grew up in the 1960s and 1970s, holding onto old school principles where my handshake is a contract, and I have never broken a contract in my life.
We are a truly unique company, unmatched by other transport services in our principles and customer understanding.
As the Owner, Director, Manager, Driver, Administrator, Website Builder, and Web Developer, I take a hands-on approach to this journey.
Over my life, I have embarked on many businesses, but this one holds a special place in my heart, this journey began in 2004 in Adelaide when I suffered a devastating foot injury that shattered my right heel into twelve pieces.
After numerous operations and being advised to consider an office job due to my inability to remain active in my concreting business, I reluctantly closed COST-RITE CONCRETE and found myself on a disability pension that fell short of my previous earnings.
Centrelink suggesting I reskill for an office position, I faced a challenging reality, as working indoors is not suited to me, I am an outdoor person at heart.
In 2006, I began selling antiques at the local market, Brickwork’s Markets in Mile End, Adelaide, where I found it challenging and connected with many wonderful people.
My stall expanded to an impressive 200 square meters, a lockable area that spared me the need to dismantle everything weekly, however, in 2008, Woolworth’s proposed an eighty-million-dollar offer for the site to build a shopping center, forcing all of us stallholders to vacate.
This led me to open a local shop, and DOUG’S ANTIQUES was born, I took myself off the disability pension and embarked on this new adventure.
Although I enjoyed running this business, I faced persistent challenges with interstate buyers, which constituted a significant portion of our sales.
Unable to find a reliable transport company, I took the plunge and purchased our first truck in 2011, initiating interstate runs to deliver our goods, as well as for other dealers we knew.
This venture quickly took off with advertising on eBay and Gumtree, and within three years, it became a thriving business I never imagined possible.
Despite many inquiries about expanding the business with more trucks and staff, I chose to maintain our small, personal approach, ensuring that my clients feel more like friends than customers, which remains a core aspect of who we are.
In late 2022, I sold everything in Adelaide and relocated to Townsville, Queensland, thereby expanding our service area to provide door-to-door delivery from Cairns to Melbourne and Adelaide, covering all cities and towns in between.
We have maintained our commitment to caring for your furniture and collectables, taking pride in our work, which is not merely a job for me but a way of life. Over the past decade, I have met many incredible people, and we continue to strive for excellence in the industry, offering outstanding service with excellent communication, and doing our utmost to be on time, every time. I am unaware of any other transport company that regularly operates this route on a programmed schedule.
We look forward to another fruitful decade of making great friends and delivering the best service this industry has ever witnessed.
When service matters, call Doug’s Freight.
